Vision
Holbeach and East Elloe Hospital Trust is committed to creating a sustainable, environmentally friendly, and socially responsible environment for our residents, staff, and the broader community. Our sustainability plan focuses on reducing our carbon footprint, minimizing waste, conserving resources, and fostering a culture of sustainability among all stakeholders.
Goals
- Reduce energy consumption.
- Reduce landfill waste by recycling where possible and reducing paper usage through digitalisation
- Implement the use of renewable energy sources, including the use of solar panel within five years.
- Enhance biodiversity and green spaces within the care home estate.
- Promote sustainable practices among residents, staff, and visitors.
The Trust is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2035 for emissions scopes 1,2,and 3 which focus on direct and indirect emissions. This has been a long-standing commitment made by the Council of Management and reviewed annually – the next review is planned for January 2025. Tangible evidence of the Trust’s commitment to Net Zero is demonstrated by the following actions:
- The Trust is committed to achieving a carbon neutral approach over a period of 10 years ending in 2035 with a focus on all aspects of the care home’s activities of caring for people, employing staff, and operating a large building and acquiring goods and services in the most cost effective and ethical way possible.
- Converting utilities for heating and lighting by using pellets for burning in the boiler and a mini-solar park to deliver a self-sufficient supply of electricity as well as supplying the national grid.
- Converting all appliances into those powered by electricity and a move away from fossil fuels such as gas and oil.
- Installation of a new energy efficient sluicing system, which also uses water and power more effectively.
- Using local grown and produced food to reduce air-miles and contribute positively to reducing the transport carbon footprint.
- Minimising the use of cars and encouraging replacement electric cars and other forms of transport which are less fuel intensive.
The review in January 2025 will be undertaken against the background of contemporary scientific intelligence driving national and international policies on Net Zero and the most up-to-date initiatives to achieve this aim in care homes.
By implementing this sustainability plan, Holbeach and East Elloe Hospital Trust will not only reduce its environmental impact but also create a healthier, more vibrant living environment for its residents and a more fulfilling workplace for its staff.
